PhD or post-doctoral researcher positions: Medical Image Computing with Deep Learning (full time)

  • PhD student in Medical Image Computing with Deep Learning (full time)

We are offering a fully funded PhD position at the Optima Lab (Medizinische Universität Wien). The focus of the research project is on learning and predicting patient-specific disease progression and treatment response from in-vivo imaging (longitudinal series of 3D optical coherence tomography (OCT) images) and non-imaging data (e.g., clinical reports) using medical image analysis and deep learning methods. These data-driven disease-progression models allow to assess individualized risk and prognosis of retinal disease. Advancements will have a real world impact on clinical management of patients suffering from retinal diseases, a leading cause of blindness today.

We are seeking outstanding PhD candidates to complement our interdisciplinary, multinational research group. Your highly attractive PhD project will be integrated in the currently flourishing field of AI for retinal image analysis (see our recent review paper: https://bit.ly/2MREzTd). It may include aspects of medical image analysis and machine learning topics (deep learning, generative/probabilistic models) on extremely well-curated large-scale longitudinal OCT datasets (examples of our work: https://arxiv.org/abs/1703.05921, https://bit.ly/2Q3HA0t, https://bit.ly/2NOMAET, https://bit.ly/2MKUdjb).

    Your qualifications:

    • MSc degree or equivalent in computer science or another relevant discipline
    • Experience in machine/deep learning, computer vision, medical image analysis, statistics, biomedical imaging or a related discipline
    • Strong programming (Python, R, Julia, PyTorch, etc.) and applied math skills
    • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, as well as written and oral communication skills in English.

    Our offer:

    • You will be immersed into an interdisciplinary environment working closely with a team of computer scientists, software engineers and medical experts.
    • You will have the opportunity to work in the promising and currently exploding fields of machine learning (i.e. deep learning), data science and medical image computing.
    • Access to extremely large sets of curated and annotated ophthalmic images.
    • The lab is well-equipped with a dedicated high-performance computing cluster containing the latest generation GPUs.
    • The group keeps close collaboration with several high-performance academic research institutions, as well as partnership with imaging device and pharmaceutical companies.

Please send applications including a CV and a cover letter indicating your interests and research experience, and/or any inquiries to: hrvoje.bogunovic (at) meduniwien.ac.at

Female candidates are explicitly encouraged to apply!

Postdoc in Machine Learning for Medical Image Analysis (full time)

We are seeking exceptionally motivated postdocs to strengthen our interdisciplinary team working on machine learning for medical image analysis. As part of our new initiative on Artificial Intelligence in Retina you will be leading exciting projects, at the interface of machine learning and medicine (see our recent review paper). The focus of the research is on automated characterization of retinal pathology from 3D optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of human retina, and on learning to predict patient-specific disease progression from a very large-scale curated imaging data and electronic health records. The goal is to enable an effective AI-based clinical decision support for retinal specialist, in a close collaboration with a leading OCT device manufacturer.

The successful candidate will be immersed into an interdisciplinary environment working closely with a team of computer scientists, software engineers and medical doctors. Advancements will have a real world impact on clinical management of patients suffering from retinal diseases, a leading cause of blindness today

    Your profile:

    • PhD degree (or soon to be completed) in a relevant discipline
    • Strong background in machine and deep learning, medical image analysis or computer vision
    • Ability to organize his/her work with minimal supervision and to meet deadlines of the project
    • Relevant publication record in the field
    • Excellent programming skills (Python, Julia, PyTorch, etc.)
    • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, as well as written and oral communication skills in English are essential

    Application:

    • Your cover letter with a summary of your previous and present scientific activities and your motivations
    • CV
    • The 2 most significant publications
    • Contact information of three references

The position is opened immediately until filled, early applications will be given priority.
