A pre-doctoral and a post-doctoral research position at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria are available immediately.

    The project
The past years were marked by outstanding progress in artificial intelligence (AI) across many application areas. This brings up an exciting question: Can AI be used to fundamentally change how biomedical research is conducted and drastically speed up the generation of novel insights and therapies?

To answer this question, we have started a transdisciplinary research project building a formal model of AI capabilities, biomedical research processes, datasets and actors. By combining quantitative analysis with expert judgement, we strive to identify roadblocks and risks, and to improve the interplay of AI and human intellect in making important new discoveries.

    Who we need
We seek candidates who are interested in connecting different scientific disciplines and who are enthusiastic about translating basic research into action. Candidates should have a good track record of peer-reviewed publications in relation to their career stage. Independence, creativity and a proactive stance towards solving problems and developing new ideas are welcome.

Candidates need to have a doctoral / PhD degree in a relevant discipline, or should receive their degree soon. We expect the ideal candidate to have a background in a topically relevant area such as: biomedical informatics / bioinformatics, AI/machine learning, biology/medicine/pharmacology with additional machine learning skills, cognitive science. We are also open to excellent applicants with other backgrounds.

Speaking German is not required, but fluency in English is a must.

    What we offer
Post-doc position: The minimum full-time gross salary is 3.889,50 € (paid 14 times per year). Pre-doc position: The minimum full-time gross salary is 2.929,00 € (paid 14 times per year).

The position is initially limited until end of 2021 but may be extended. Reduced working hours (i.e. less than full-time) can be negotiated.

You will work with a growing, multidisciplinary and international team at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support at the Medical University of Vienna, as well as research collaborators across the globe. The city of Vienna has the highest quality of life in the world according to Mercer's 2019 Quality of Living Index and offers a vibrant cultural scene and excellent social security.

COVID-19 note: We are committed to providing a safe working environment through work-from-home arrangements and on-site measures.

For a research project funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), a PhD candidate (pre-doc) position at the Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics and Intelligent Systems, part of the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, is offered.

    THE PROJECT:
A fundamental problem of medical practice today is that a sizable fraction of patients undergoing drug treatment experiences adverse events or a lack of positive effects. A part of this variability in drug response can be explained by genetic differences between patients – the focus of a discipline called pharmacogenomics. The main focus of this project is to investigate how computers and mobile devices can help establish pharmacogenomics in medical routine to make medical practice safer and more effective for all patients.

    THE POSITION:
Ideally, candidates should fulfil AT LEAST TWO of the criteria listed below.
    * Good software development skills (e.g., Python, Java, PHP)
    * Good biomedical or pharmacological background knowledge (ideally experience in working with clinical genetic data)
    * Good scientific track-record (in relation to time spent in academia; applicants with a strong background in industry are also welcome)
    * Experience with designing, deploying and evaluating clinical decision support systems or mobile health applications
Candidates should have a master’s degree in a related discipline, such as medical informatics, bioinformatics, pharmacology, medicine, biology or genetics.
Enthusiasm, self-motivation, creativity as well as a proactive stance on solving problems and developing new ideas are welcome. We seek candidates who are able to connect different disciplines and who are enthusiastic about creating tools that directly benefit the lives of patients. Speaking German is not required, but fluency in English (written and spoken) is a must. Willingness to learn German is a plus for foreign applicants.
The minimum gross salary is 1.997 Euros (14 times per year) for a 30 hour / week position. The position is limited to a total of three years.

    THE WORKPLACE:
The Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics and Intelligent Systems is part of the Medical University of Vienna and associated with the Vienna General Hospital, one of the largest university clinics in the world, facilitating the scientific collaboration with a large number of co-located clinics and laboratories. The city of Vienna has the highest quality of life in the world according to Mercer's 2012 Quality of Living Index and offers a vibrant cultural scene.

    HOW TO APPLY:
Applicants should submit a single document containing a curriculum vitae, photo, list of publications (if applicable) and contact details of at least one referee. Please send your application as an e-mail with the title “Job application” to:
